Projects

Everything we make is open source and developed in public on GitHub. Most of the recent work is on the electroPioreactor, an affordable electro-bioreactor for growing hydrogen-oxidising bacteria, and on the medium and methods that go with it.

electroPioreactor

A Pioreactor with electrodes in the culture and a CO₂ line. The Aseptic electroPioreactor (AEP) is being built and tested with Imperial College London and the University of Edinburgh under CARMA Hub funding; the cheaper mixed-culture electroPioreactor (MEP) is for enrichment and teaching.

CARMA Hub project

Affordable Aseptic Electro-Bioreactor for Reproducible HOB Research. Can two labs with the same open kit get the same results?

Medium, methods and literature

A chloride-free growth medium that doubles as the electrolyte, enrichment protocols for the lab and the kitchen table, and the reading behind them.

PioFlo

A flow-through Pioreactor, so the Pioreactor software can control a fermenter of any size. A first prototype has been run with kombucha.

OpenValve and other hardware

A 3D-printable solenoid pinch valve from Harvey Mudd College’s clinic team, the CO₂ gas train, holders and the small parts that make it all fit on a bench.

Past projects holds our notes on equipment and first experiments from 2023 and 2024, and Background explains why we chose hydrogen-oxidising bacteria in the first place. Both are worth a read, but the pages above are where the current work is.
